Lexington Memorial Hospital is opening a pediatric sleep studies program in June 2010, making it the only provider of pediatric sleep studies in Davidson County, The new program is being initiated through a collaborative effort between the hospital and the Pediatric Sleep Lab at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Lexington Memorial's pediatric sleep studies program will serve patients from infants through adolescence. The studies will be performed under the medical supervision of Wake Forest Baptist's board certified sleep medicine physicians with subspecialties in pediatrics. Prior to the collaboration, Lexington area pediatric patients were required to travel to Brenner Children's Hospital or elsewhere for sleep study services.
Pediatric studies performed at Lexington Memorial will focus on sleep disordered breathing (such as sleep apnea), narcolepsy, other forms of excessive sleepiness, insomnia, and unusual sleep related behaviors in children.
Lexington Memorial has performed adult sleep studies since 2006 in collaboration with the physicians of Johnson Neurological Clinic, and this adult program will continue uninterrupted. The addition of pediatric studies to Lexington Memorial's continuum of care exemplifies the shared commitment between the hospital and Wake Forest Baptist to continually broaden the scope of care offered to the local community, said Steve Schultz, President and CEO.
