Identifying early stage health risks is a powerful tool in preventing serious illness. For employers this translates into lower health insurance costs and increased employee productivity by reducing time lost from work. For employees this results in a healthier lifestyle and reduced spending on both insurance premiums and out-of-pocket healthcare costs. It is a win-win proposition for all involved.
Recently, Lexington Memorial and Best Health, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center's premiere wellness and corporate health division, partnered with the City of Lexington to provide health screenings and health risk appraisals for 113 city employees. The results were impressive -- notably that through identifiable lifestyle changes, these city employees may on average improve their life expectancy by 6.8 years.
As a result of the screenings and risk appraisals conducted by Lexington Memorial, specific opportunities for change were identified in areas such as reducing cancer risks, improving fitness, managing high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing coronary risk, and managing stress. In response to these opportunities, Lexington Memorial will develop health and wellness plans to assist city employees in achieving their optimal health goals.
This is the first of many partnerships Lexington Memorial hopes to form with area businesses and organizations as it works to build a healthier community.
